Oscar turns 80!!
Oscar awards began on May 16, 1929, when the academy awards were first held without any fanfare. It was known as "The statuette" before officially naming it as OSCAR.The president of the Academy Margaret Herrick saw the statuette on the office desk way back in 1931,and exclaimed "He looks like my uncle Oscar!". Ever since the award was known as "Oscar".Although there have been various versions about the origin of the name, the name ‘Oscar’ stuck. The award is about 13.5 inches long and is coated with 24 carat gold. They are produced by the Dodge trophy company , Illinois and costs around 300$.
With only 250 attendees, the very first Academy Awards, held on May 16, 1929, was not broadcast, was hosted at the prestigious Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Today the academy has more than 6000 members.."Just about everyone who helps make motion pictures".
The first Indian to win an Oscar was Bhanu Athaiya for her costume design for Gandhi ,though she shared the award with another designer.Last year A.R.Rahman won the award for the Best Score for Slumdog Millionaire and Best Song for Jai Ho.Rahman is the first Indian to win two Oscars. Resul Pookutty and Gulzar were the other winners for Sound mixing and lyrics for the same film respectively.
The awards that started without much publicity now has become a prestigious international event and is watched by millions across the globe..
i think, apart from the margaret episode, there are a couple of other incidents too, which are often quoted as the reason behind the naming of academy awards of merit as the oscars....bette davis naming the award after her husband comes to my mind....
ReplyDeleteWell didn't want to go into all of them..hence went into just the Magaret episode, since that seems to be the most prominent and talked about .
