Roger Federer finally breaks the Clay jinx

Finally we see Roger Federer clinch the French open title on sunday with his masterful strokes and performance. The Swiss maestro realised a lifetime dream of finally lifting a Roland Garros title to become only the sixth man in history to win on all four grand slam surfaces with his victory over Robin Soderling equalling Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam trophies. Federer has already three Australian Open titles, five US Open titles and five Wimbledon titles in his kitty. This has just added another feather to his overcrowded hat.

History was at stake, and Federer was at his best, completely outplaying No. 23-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden en route to a 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory in a French Open final that lacked suspense but not significance. For only two moments was Federer the least bit shaken. It happened after the first point at 2-1 in the second set, when a fan went right up to Federer and tried to put a red hat on him. Federer brushed the man aside before security guards even got close enough to intervene.

“A touch scary,” Federer said, lamenting he didn’t ask for a chance to gather himself. “It definitely felt uncomfortable once he came close to me. Looking back, it definitely threw me out of my rhythm a little bit.”

Federer claimed victory when Soderling netted a service return after 1hr 55min on court.

When the Swiss national anthem played for the first time after a French Open men’s final, tears rolled down Federer’s cheeks, with silver trophy nestled in his arms and his beautiful pregnant wife looking on from the stands and cheering him.“Maybe my greatest victory—or certainly the one that takes the most pressure off my shoulders,” Federer said in French, moments after dropping to his knees, caking them with clay.Federer came heartbreakingly close in the past, losing the previous three French Open finals.

"If I had to retire tomorrow I would be happy because I feel like I've put everything out there.I always said it doesn't matter when I retire, I'll be at peace. I can walk away from this game tomorrow, but I don't choose to because I love this game too much.Tennis is not forever; I know that. But I'll try to definitely enjoy it as long as I can." added Federer.

He is arguably one of the greatest player of all times.

  1. Its unfortunate that the most talented person ever to grace a tennis court, despite winning 14 grandslams, is still being considered only as "arguably one of the greatest ever".It left me pondering whether there will be anything in this world which is beyond arguments and accepted unanimously all over.Well, his prowess has certainly left no doubts whatsoever in the minds of connoisseurs of the game. Nothing, regarding his versatility, has been put more sucinctly than by a statement which was made by 8 time grandslam winner Connors on RF "In the modern game ,you are either a grass court specialist,a clay court or a hard court specialist- or you are Roger Federer".
