Star Trek

Director: J J Abrams
Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana
Genre: Action/Adventure, Sciuence Fiction/Fantasy, Adaptation and Sequel
Running Time: 2 hr. 7 min.

A prequel (in this season of prequels/restarts: X-men, Batman Begins) to the all time popular TV series, this intergalactic adventure centers around the meeting of two characteristically opposite Starfleet recruits (Starship Enterprise): half-Vulcan Spock and all-American rebel James T. Kirk. For the fans who have grown with William Shatner/Patrick Stewart as Kirk and Leonard Nimoy/Jonathan Frakes as Spock, it takes some time to warm up to Chris Pine & Zachary Quinto playing the roles of Kirk and Spock respectively.

This prequel takes us through the origins on how Kirk and Spock grew to become what they were known, became famous for. Kirk, the flamboyant, risk taking, rebellious, quick to think/act hero (who later became the captain of the starship) and Spock, the thinking man who looks for logic in every action or decision, bereft of emotions (being a vulcan). However at the turning point, Spock loses control of his emotions (human-mother), helped by an attempt to correct the future (going into past by the character, interesting scene), thus navigating the story to a stage which we have been familiar with.

After the initial half an hour on how the two characters grow and meet, the rest of the story hinges on how they settle their differences to defeat a nefarious time-travelling Romulan, Captain Nero (played by Eric Bana, I didnt realize it was Eric till later when i came to know). Amid explosions, fistfights, and faster-than-light travel, we witness the beginnings of one of the most famous friendships in TV and movie history.

This movie too has plenty of Star Trek terms and sci-fi words to comprehend, including Warp drive (Faster than light propulsion system), time travel, black holes, transporter (interesting transport mechanism, wish we had one) and my favourite Vulcan Salute.

Dont miss this movie for its origin, characterisation and a trip down memory lanes. The film also appeals to audiences not familiar with Star Trek. And I for one, wished William Shatner to continue playing Kirk.

Rating: 3.75/5

Trivia: Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the wife of Star Trek's creator, Gene, is the only actor to have appeared in every iteration of the franchise on TV and in the movies, including this one, as the voice of the ship's computer. She recorded her lines for the movie only weeks before her her death in December of last year.
