Oscar awards began on May 16, 1929, when the academy awards were first held without any fanfare. It was known as "The statuette" before officially naming it as OSCAR.The president of the Academy Margaret Herrick saw the statuette on the office desk way back in 1931,and exclaimed "He looks like my uncle Oscar!". Ever since the award was known as "Oscar". Although there have been various versions about the origin of the name, the name ‘Oscar’ stuck.
