Sahib Sindh Sultan - The Speciality Indian Restaurant on Wheels.

Sahib Sindh Sultan was the first locomotive train that made its run from Bori Bunder to Thane (Mumbai) in 1853 and the restaurant is a tribute to that bygone era. The ambience, interiors and the culinary experience is a traditional mix of the Indian royalty and the British Raj.

Make sure you book a table well in advance because the place tends to get real crowded and there is a huge waiting period. The ambience here is just excellent. The eating area is designed like a 17th Century railway compartment .There are full length mirror on one side of the platform which gave it a much longer look. The interiors are all with plush silk upholstery, overhead racks with vintage British hats and old suitcases with glass partitions between the carriages. You could also see stars if you peek above the train outside the train, as in a real station. The platform has an old telephone and an old railway map. The waiters are dressed as Ticket checkers, and there is a bell ringing in the platform after every finite interval of time .You could either choose to dine on the train (Note : Accommodates only 4 people comfortably) or in the platform, rest assured that it’s equally enchanting, with twinkling ceiling lights and an equal dose of lavishness.

The menu is an interesting mélange of the cuisines of several states, including U.P, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab and has a comprehensive mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The silverware and polished glasses go well with the food .A must try is the Makkai Shorba and the Tomato Dhaniya Shorba which has just the right mix of spices, though I would opt for better bread sticks. There are many dishes that are a must try here some of them namely Railway Mutton Curry ,Mangal Pandey Ki Pasand (a version of the Kabuli Chana),Karara Palak Chaat, Tawa Surmai, Atta Chicken ,Kadai Paneer Kamalkakdi and Kakori Kabab. I think you could try almost anything on the menu and have a guaranteed great meal. A must try beverage here is the Sandalwood drink (cant remember the name though), its a right blend of sandalwood, saffron and lemon, and so is Panna and Ganna Sharbat.End your experience on a sweet note by enjoying their litchi ki tehri ,flambéed gulab jamun or a pineapple halwa (though not much options here).

This restaurant charges 10% Service Charge in addition to 12% VAT. Though the portions are not really large enough and rates slightly on the higher side ,you wouldn't mind the pinch on your pocket ,since the food is delicious. The only suggestion to them is that the mouth fresheners are kept on the way out near the door. It gets a lil messy when a bunch of people finish their meals and leave.Instead they could present it (conventional style) along with the cheque.

A unique fine dining experience that captures and celebrates the quintessence of a by gone era.
